Add support for PROOF

PROOF will need some refactoring, but by the time we are here most of the infrasturcture code should be in, so we shouldn't have to make a mistake...

Attached is a second version - one that seems to mostly work, and also gets back info.

Attached is a small guy that has some test code in it that mostly works... this is jsut to make it transportable.
